BREAST AUGMENTATION
What is breast augmentation surgery?
Breast augmentation is a procedure that uses implants to increase breast fullness, to replace volume and to change the position of breasts for women. These changes in women’s bodies can happen after pregnancies, breast-feeding, ageing and also weight loss. Some women also feel that their upper body is not proportionate to their lower body.
Breast augmentation is one of the ways to enhance your breasts, and it remains one of the most popular procedures performed worldwide. It can have a very positive effect on both a person’s morale and self-confidence.
Who is a suitable candidate for breast augmentation surgery?
Those people who are unhappy with their breast size and would like to increase this, resulting in a boost in both self esteem and confidence would ideally be suited to breast augmentation.
How long does a breast augmentation last?
Results are visible immediately; however breast position, shape and size will change over the first weeks. The implants are long lasting however breasts will drop over time due to ageing, gravity, and weight loss. The average lifespan of an implant is 16 years.
How is breast augmentation procedure performed?
An incision is made usually in the crease under the breast at the midpoint. The breast tissue is lifted, creating a pocket in the breast area for the implant, which may be placed either under the chest muscle, or directly under the breast tissue. This decision would be discussed with your surgeon for the best results to suit your individual circumstances.
Duration of operation - 45 minutes
Hospital stay: 0-1 night
What to expect immediately after surgery?
Initially your breasts may be taped high on your chest and you will be wearing a surgical bra to support, hold and protect you for the next few weeks. Mild discomfort and pain may be experienced, especially from submuscular augmentation. Your breasts will feel tight, firm and swollen, however as swelling reduces, the breasts will drop into a more normal shape and position. Drains are not used anymore by many clinics such as us, finding out that they are not effective in case of bleeding. Instead, experience and meticulous bleeding control are considered to be more effective.
How long will it be before I can get back to my normal life?
A short surgical time with experienced hands fastens postoperative recovery very significantly. Some people may be able to leave hospital the same day as surgery, although a one-night stay may be recommended for your comfort. You can return to work within one week as long as it does not involve increased physical activity, which should be restricted for up to three weeks post surgery. Heavy exercise should be avoided for three months.
Can breast augmentation surgery be performed without scar?
Breast augmentation involves an incision and necessitates a scar however the technique of using the crease under the breast leaves minimal scarring, which is then hidden under the new breast. These scars are conspicuous initially but after six months they will be remarkably improved.
From what age can you have breast augmentation?
Generally it should be left until a girl has stopped growing.
Do breast implants look normal?
Definitely. With today’s naturally shaped implants, techniques and a wide range of sizes and types of implants, the final results can look fantastic.
